Botox Aftercare: What to Do and Avoid After Botox #
Botox aftercare is generally simple, but what you do immediately after treatment can help minimize temporary swelling, redness, and bruising. Most patients can return to normal daily activities right away, although there are a few precautions your injector may recommend.
At AIVI Aesthetics, we provide individualized aftercare instructions based on the areas treated, your medical history, and your treatment plan.
What Should You Do Immediately After Botox? #
After your Botox treatment:
- Keep the treated area clean.
- Avoid rubbing, pressing, or aggressively massaging the injection sites.
- Resume normal gentle daily activities.
- Follow any specific instructions provided by your injector.
- Contact your provider if you experience symptoms that concern you.
Small bumps, mild redness, tenderness, or bruising around injection sites can occur and typically resolve.
Can I Exercise After Botox? #
It’s commonly recommended to avoid strenuous exercise for approximately 4 hours after Botox, although your injector may recommend waiting longer depending on your treatment.
Exercise increases blood flow and may also involve pressure, sweating, bending, or rubbing the treated areas.
Light walking and normal daily activities are generally fine.
Can I Drink Alcohol After Botox? #
Alcohol does not directly “cancel out” Botox. However, alcohol can contribute to flushing and may increase the likelihood of bruising in some people.
If you’re prone to bruising, avoiding alcohol around the time of treatment may be helpful.
Can I Wear Makeup After Botox? #
Makeup can generally be applied after treatment once the injection sites have settled, but avoid aggressively rubbing or pressing the treated areas.
Use clean hands, brushes, and applicators to reduce contamination around fresh injection sites.
Can I Lie Down After Botox? #
Many injectors traditionally recommend remaining upright for approximately 4 hours after Botox.
Evidence that lying down itself significantly changes Botox results is limited, but avoiding pressure or manipulation of freshly treated areas is a reasonable precaution.
Follow the instructions given by your injector.
How Should I Sleep After Botox? #
You generally don’t need to change your normal sleeping position long-term.
On the day of treatment, avoid intentionally pressing, rubbing, or massaging the injected areas. If you accidentally roll onto your side while sleeping, don’t panic.
Can I Get a Facial or Massage After Botox? #
Avoid facial treatments that involve significant rubbing, pressure, massage, or manipulation immediately after Botox.
This includes treatments such as:
facial massage, gua sha, vigorous cleansing, certain facials, and other treatments involving substantial pressure over recently injected areas.
Your injector can tell you when it’s appropriate to resume a particular treatment.
Can I Fly After Botox? #
Yes, flying after Botox is generally considered acceptable. Cabin pressure isn’t known to deactivate Botox.
The bigger considerations are following your normal aftercare instructions and avoiding unnecessary pressure or rubbing of the treated areas.

Can I Take Medications After Botox? #
Don’t stop a prescribed medication simply because you’ve had Botox unless the clinician who prescribed it tells you to do so.
Certain medications and supplements may increase bruising risk, while some medications can have clinically relevant interactions with botulinum toxin products.
Patients should tell their injector about their medications, supplements, allergies, and medical conditions before treatment.
When Can I Wash My Face After Botox? #
Gentle cleansing is generally appropriate after treatment. Avoid aggressive rubbing, scrubbing, facial massage, or excessive pressure over the injection sites immediately afterward.
Use clean hands and gently pat the skin dry.
What Should I Avoid After Botox? #
For the immediate post-treatment period, generally avoid:
Rubbing or massaging the injection sites
Strenuous exercise for the period recommended by your provider
Heavy pressure over treated areas
Aggressive facial treatments immediately afterward
Your individualized instructions should take priority over general online advice.
What’s Normal After Botox? #
Temporary effects around the injection sites can include:
mild redness, small raised bumps, tenderness, swelling, or bruising.
Botox results don’t appear immediately. Effects typically begin developing over the following several days, with the full response taking longer.
When Should I Contact My Provider? #
Contact your injector if you have a reaction that seems unusual, severe, persistent, or concerning.
Seek urgent medical attention for symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, significant generalized weakness, or other severe symptoms.
Botox Aftercare FAQs #
Can I shower after Botox? #
Generally, yes. Avoid aggressively rubbing or massaging the treated areas.
Can I bend over after Botox? #
Normal brief movements are unlikely to be an issue. Follow your injector’s instructions regarding activity immediately following treatment.
Can I touch my face after Botox? #
Normal gentle contact is different from vigorously rubbing or massaging freshly injected areas.
Can I sleep on my side after Botox? #
You don’t need to maintain a special sleeping position indefinitely. Avoid deliberate pressure or manipulation of freshly treated areas.
Can I use skincare after Botox? #
Gentle skincare is generally appropriate, but avoid aggressive rubbing, exfoliation, or anything that significantly irritates the injection sites immediately after treatment.
How long does Botox aftercare last? #
Most precautions concern the hours immediately following treatment, although timing varies depending on the activity and your provider’s instructions.
