Will Microneedling Help With Blackheads?

Will Microneedling Help With Blackheads? #

If you’re dealing with blackheads on your nose, chin, cheeks, or forehead, you may be wondering:

Will microneedling help with blackheads?

Not directly.

Microneedling can improve skin texture, enlarged-looking pores, certain acne scars, fine lines, and collagen quality, but it is not primarily designed to remove blackheads or clear clogged pores.

Blackheads form when a pore becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Microneedling works differently: it creates controlled microscopic injuries that stimulate the skin’s natural healing and collagen-remodeling response.

So if blackheads are your main concern, we usually need to address the congestion first.

The treatment has to match the concern.

What Are Blackheads? #

Blackheads are a type of acne lesion called an open comedone.

They develop when a hair follicle becomes clogged with a mixture of:

  • Sebum, or skin oil
  • Dead skin cells
  • Keratin and debris

When the clogged material is exposed at the surface, it oxidizes and appears dark.

The black color isn’t dirt.

That means washing your face harder isn’t necessarily going to remove them.

Are Blackheads Caused by Dirty Skin? #

No.

Having blackheads doesn’t mean your skin is dirty.

In fact, aggressively scrubbing the skin in an attempt to “clean out” your pores can cause irritation and potentially worsen inflammation.

Blackheads are influenced by factors such as:

  • Oil production
  • Dead skin-cell buildup
  • Acne tendency
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal influences
  • Skincare and cosmetic products

The goal is to manage the congestion without damaging the skin barrier.

How Does Microneedling Work? #

Microneedling creates controlled microinjuries in the skin using very small needles.

These microinjuries initiate a wound-healing response and stimulate collagen remodeling.

Depending on the patient, microneedling may help improve:

  • Uneven texture
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Fine lines
  • Certain acne scars
  • Early collagen loss
  • Overall skin quality

What it does not primarily do is extract oil and keratin from a clogged pore.

Does Microneedling Remove Blackheads? #

Microneedling shouldn’t be viewed as a blackhead-extraction procedure.

The needles aren’t being used to empty individual clogged pores.

If you have visible blackheads before treatment, don’t assume they will disappear simply because a microneedling device passes over the area.

You may eventually notice smoother-looking skin and more refined-looking pores, but that is different from treating the underlying comedonal acne.

Can Microneedling Unclog Pores? #

Not in the same way that acne-focused skincare or professional congestion treatments can.

Microneedling primarily works through controlled injury and collagen remodeling.

A clogged pore is a different problem.

If your skin is significantly congested, we may first focus on:

  • Appropriate cleansing
  • Exfoliating ingredients when suitable
  • Retinoids when appropriate
  • Acne management
  • Professional skin treatments
  • Reducing products contributing to congestion

Once the skin is more stable, microneedling may be considered for concerns that remain.

Can Microneedling Help Large Pores and Blackheads? #

This is where the distinction becomes important.

You can have:

Blackheads + enlarged-looking pores

but these aren’t exactly the same concern.

Microneedling may help make enlarged pores appear more refined by improving the surrounding skin texture and collagen support.

But it doesn’t permanently close pores or stop them from becoming clogged.

If blackheads are also present, the treatment plan needs to address both.

Can Microneedling Make Pores Smaller? #

Microneedling may make enlarged pores appear smaller, but it cannot eliminate them.

Pores are normal structures in the skin.

As collagen and texture improve around the pore, the skin may look smoother and the pores may become less noticeable.

That’s very different from claiming that microneedling permanently “closes” pores.

Healthy skin has pores.

The goal is smoother, more refined-looking skin—not poreless skin.

Will Microneedling Help Blackheads on the Nose? #

Microneedling isn’t usually the first treatment I would choose specifically for nose blackheads.

The nose has a high concentration of sebaceous glands and often develops visible congestion.

But there’s another issue:

What you’re calling blackheads may actually be sebaceous filaments.

Blackheads vs Sebaceous Filaments #

These are commonly confused.

Blackheads #

Blackheads are open comedones caused by clogged follicles.

They may appear as individual dark plugs and can be part of acne.

Sebaceous Filaments #

Sebaceous filaments are normal structures that help move sebum through the pore.

They can appear as small gray, tan, or dark dots, especially across the nose and central face.

You can make sebaceous filaments less noticeable, but you cannot permanently remove them.

They naturally refill.

This is why some patients say:

“I extract my nose and everything comes back two days later.”

The issue may not be blackheads at all.

Should Blackheads Be Removed Before Microneedling? #

If your skin is significantly congested, it may make sense to address the congestion before beginning a microneedling series.

That doesn’t mean aggressively extracting every pore the night before your appointment.

In fact, creating irritated, inflamed, or broken skin immediately before microneedling may interfere with treatment.

Your provider can determine the appropriate sequence.

Sometimes:

First ? control congestion

Then ? improve texture and collagen

Treatment order matters.

Can You Microneedle Over Active Acne? #

Active inflammatory acne requires careful evaluation before microneedling.

Microneedling is generally better suited to treating what acne left behind—such as certain atrophic scars—than aggressively treating actively inflamed lesions.

If your skin has significant:

  • Pustules
  • Inflamed papules
  • Cysts
  • Nodules
  • Infection

the priority may be controlling the active condition first.

Otherwise, you’re trying to remodel old acne damage while new inflammation is still occurring.

Does Microneedling Help Acne? #

It depends on what part of acne you’re talking about.

Microneedling can be useful for certain atrophic acne scars.

It is not primarily a treatment for:

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Active pustules
  • Active cystic acne
  • Excessive oil production

This distinction is important.

Active acne and acne scars are two different treatment goals.

Does Microneedling Help Acne Scars? #

Yes, certain depressed acne scars may improve with microneedling.

For example, some patients with rolling or boxcar scars may benefit from collagen remodeling.

But scar type matters.

Deep ice-pick scars or tethered rolling scars may require other approaches.

A patient can also have:

  • Active acne
  • Blackheads
  • Dark marks
  • Large pores
  • Acne scars

all at the same time.

One procedure isn’t necessarily going to solve all five.

What Is Better for Blackheads Than Microneedling? #

The appropriate treatment depends on your skin, but blackhead management may involve options such as:

  • Salicylic acid
  • Retinoids
  • Appropriate exfoliation
  • Professional extractions
  • Acne-focused skincare
  • Chemical peels
  • Professional facials

The goal is to normalize congestion without creating excessive irritation.

You don’t need to strip your skin to make your pores clean.

Does Salicylic Acid Help Blackheads? #

Salicylic acid is commonly used in acne and congestion-focused skincare because it can help exfoliate within oily, clogged pores.

It may be useful for patients with:

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Oily skin
  • Congestion

But concentration and frequency matter.

Using more salicylic acid doesn’t necessarily produce faster results.

Overusing exfoliating products can damage the skin barrier and leave the face irritated and inflamed.

Does Retinol Help Blackheads? #

Retinoids may be useful for comedonal acne because they influence cell turnover and help prevent follicles from becoming clogged.

However, the right product depends on the patient.

And if you’re undergoing microneedling, your provider may have you temporarily stop retinoids before or after treatment to minimize unnecessary irritation.

Don’t restart every active product immediately after microneedling simply because you’re worried about clogged pores.

Let the skin heal.

Can Chemical Peels Help Blackheads? #

Certain chemical peels may be useful for patients with oily, congested, or acne-prone skin.

A peel may make more sense than microneedling when the primary concern is:

  • Blackheads
  • Superficial congestion
  • Oiliness
  • Uneven tone

Microneedling may make more sense when the primary concern is:

  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Texture
  • Fine lines
  • Collagen loss

Sometimes both treatments may have a place in a long-term skin plan.

That doesn’t mean they need to be performed at the same time.

Can HydraFacial Help With Blackheads? #

A professional facial may be useful when congestion and blackheads are the primary concern.

At AIVI Aesthetics, a HydraFacial or another appropriately selected facial may be considered for patients who need cleansing, exfoliation, and congestion-focused skin maintenance rather than collagen induction.

If your skin is congested but otherwise smooth and healthy, you may not need microneedling at all.

Not every skin concern needs a needle.

Microneedling vs HydraFacial for Blackheads #

If your main concern is blackheads and congestion, a facial-based approach may make more sense.

If your main concern is acne scars and texture, microneedling may provide more meaningful collagen remodeling.

For patients who have both, we can build a treatment plan that addresses each concern appropriately.

The goal isn’t to perform every treatment available.

It’s to choose the right treatment at the right time.

What About RF Microneedling for Blackheads? #

RF microneedling is also not primarily a blackhead treatment.

RF microneedling combines microneedles with radiofrequency energy to create deeper controlled thermal remodeling.

At AIVI Aesthetics, we use Vivace RF Microneedling when deeper collagen remodeling is appropriate.

It may make sense for concerns such as:

  • Certain acne scars
  • Mild laxity
  • Crepey skin
  • Fine lines
  • Overall texture

But if your only concern is blackheads on your nose, RF microneedling is probably not the most targeted solution.

Will Microneedling Reduce Oily Skin? #

Microneedling isn’t primarily an oil-control procedure.

Oil production is influenced by sebaceous glands, hormones, genetics, and other factors.

Improving skin texture may make the complexion look more refined, but microneedling does not permanently shut down oil production.

If oily skin and blackheads are your biggest concerns, the skincare plan matters just as much—if not more—than the procedure.

Can Microneedling Cause Blackheads? #

Microneedling does not necessarily cause blackheads, but some patients may notice temporary bumps or congestion during the recovery period.

Sometimes the issue may be related to:

  • Heavy post-treatment products
  • Occlusive skincare
  • Changes in the normal routine
  • Pre-existing congestion
  • Irritation

If you repeatedly break out or develop clogged pores after microneedling, tell your provider.

Your aftercare products may need to be adjusted.

Should I Extract Blackheads After Microneedling? #

Not immediately.

Freshly microneedled skin needs time to recover.

Avoid squeezing, picking, scrubbing, or aggressively extracting pores during the early healing period.

You don’t want to add unnecessary trauma to skin that has already undergone controlled treatment.

Let the skin barrier recover first.

Can I Use Pore Strips After Microneedling? #

Avoid pore strips on freshly treated skin.

They create additional pulling and irritation and are unnecessary during the early recovery period.

Once the skin is completely healed, you can discuss an appropriate congestion-management routine with your provider.

But pore strips shouldn’t be your entire blackhead strategy.

Can I Use a Scrub After Microneedling? #

Not during early recovery.

Physical scrubs can add friction and irritation to recently treated skin.

If your face feels rough or dry after microneedling, don’t assume those areas are clogged pores that need to be scrubbed away.

Temporary roughness can be part of normal healing.

Don’t exfoliate normal recovery.

How Long Should I Wait Before Treating Blackheads After Microneedling? #

The timing depends on your treatment intensity and how quickly your skin heals.

Don’t restart exfoliating acids, retinoids, extraction treatments, or other potentially irritating products simply because a set number of hours has passed.

Your skin should be healed, comfortable, and ready.

Follow your provider’s specific aftercare instructions.

What If I Have Blackheads and Acne Scars? #

This is a common combination.

We may need to create a treatment plan that addresses:

Step 1: Active acne and congestion

Step 2: Skin stability

Step 3: Acne scars and texture

Microneedling may become much more useful during the scar-remodeling stage.

This approach can also help reduce the cycle of treating old scars while new acne continues to create additional marks.

How Many Microneedling Sessions Do I Need for Pores and Acne Scars? #

If microneedling is being performed for acne scars, enlarged-looking pores, and texture—not the blackheads themselves—an initial series may be recommended.

Many professional microneedling plans involve approximately 3–6 treatments, often spaced several weeks apart.

But there is no universal number.

Your plan depends on:

  • Scar type
  • Skin texture
  • Skin tone
  • Treatment intensity
  • Device
  • Individual response

More treatments don’t automatically mean better skin.

Is Microneedling Worth It If I Have Blackheads? #

It may be worthwhile if you also have concerns that microneedling is actually designed to address.

For example:

Blackheads only?

Microneedling probably isn’t your first choice.

Blackheads + large pores + acne scars + uneven texture?

Microneedling may eventually have an important role in your overall plan.

The difference is the treatment goal.

So, Will Microneedling Help With Blackheads? #

Microneedling is not primarily a treatment for blackheads and does not directly extract or clear clogged pores.

Microneedling is better suited to improving:

  • Certain acne scars
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Uneven texture
  • Fine lines
  • Collagen loss
  • Overall skin quality

If blackheads are your primary concern, an acne- and congestion-focused approach may make more sense.

And remember:

Blackheads aren’t dirt.

Don’t scrub, squeeze, or over-exfoliate your skin trying to make every pore disappear.

Healthy skin still has pores.

A Skin-Forward Approach to Blackheads at AIVI Aesthetics #

At AIVI Aesthetics, we don’t recommend microneedling simply because someone says their pores look clogged.

First, we look at what’s actually happening.

Are you dealing with:

  • Blackheads?
  • Sebaceous filaments?
  • Active acne?
  • Enlarged-looking pores?
  • Acne scars?
  • Uneven texture?

If congestion is the primary concern, we may focus first on skincare, professional facials, HydraFacial, chemical peels, or another appropriate acne-focused approach.

If the congestion is controlled but acne scars, enlarged-looking pores, and texture remain, SkinPen microneedling may make sense.

If deeper collagen remodeling is needed, Vivace RF Microneedling may be considered.

You don’t need the most aggressive treatment.

You need the treatment that matches your skin.
