How Many Botox Units Do I Need? A Guide by Treatment Area #
One of the most common questions patients ask before Botox is, “How many units will I need?”
There isn’t one number that works for everyone. Botox dosing depends on the treatment area, muscle strength, facial anatomy, desired amount of movement, previous treatments, and your injector’s assessment.
The goal isn’t necessarily to use the fewest or most units. It’s to use an appropriate dose for your anatomy and treatment goals while maintaining the amount of natural movement you want.
How Are Botox Units Determined? #
Botox is measured in units, not syringes or milliliters.
Your injector determines dosing by evaluating factors such as muscle strength and movement, treatment area, facial anatomy and symmetry, previous response to Botox, treatment goals, and whether you prefer more movement or a stronger reduction in movement.
Two patients treating the same area may therefore receive different doses.
How Many Units of Botox for Frown Lines? #
For moderate-to-severe glabellar or “11” lines, the FDA-approved Botox Cosmetic dose is 20 units, distributed across five injection sites.
Individual treatment plans can differ based on anatomy and clinical assessment.
How Many Units of Botox for Crow’s Feet? #
The FDA-approved Botox Cosmetic dose for crow’s feet is 24 units total when treating both sides—12 units per side.
Treatment planning may vary depending on anatomy, muscle activity, previous treatment and treatment goals.
How Many Units of Botox for Forehead Lines? #
For FDA-approved treatment of forehead lines together with glabellar lines, the labeled total dose is 40 units: 20 units for the forehead and 20 units for the glabellar complex.
Forehead treatment requires careful assessment because the muscles responsible for forehead lines also help elevate the eyebrows.
This is why Botox dosing shouldn’t simply be based on a generic unit chart.
What About Botox for More Than One Area? #
When multiple areas are treated, the total number of units is the sum of the doses used in each treatment area.
For example, the FDA-approved dosing for simultaneous treatment of forehead lines, glabellar lines and crow’s feet is 64 units total.
That doesn’t mean every patient needs exactly 64 units. Your treatment should be individualized.
How Many Units for a Botox Lip Flip? #
A Botox lip flip uses a relatively small amount of neuromodulator around the upper lip.
Unlike forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet, cosmetic Botox treatment for a lip flip is off-label, so there isn’t an FDA-approved Botox Cosmetic unit dose specifically for a lip flip.
Your injector determines the amount based on anatomy and desired effect.
How Many Units for Masseter Botox? #
Masseter treatment is also individualized and off-label when Botox Cosmetic is used for cosmetic jaw slimming.
The appropriate dose depends considerably on masseter size, strength, facial anatomy and the reason for treatment.
Avoid presenting a universal masseter dose as though everyone should receive the same amount.
Does More Botox Mean Better Results? #
No. More units don’t automatically mean a better cosmetic result.
Too little may not provide the desired effect or duration, while excessive weakening of a muscle can produce an unwanted cosmetic or functional result.
Appropriate dosing and injection placement matter.
Can I Get Fewer Units for a More Natural Result? #
Sometimes—but lower dosing isn’t the only thing that determines whether Botox looks natural.
Injection placement, facial anatomy, muscle balance and treatment goals are also important.
A natural-looking Botox treatment should be customized rather than simply reducing every patient’s dose.
Do Men Usually Need More Botox Units? #
Some men have greater facial muscle mass or stronger muscle activity and may require different dosing, but sex alone shouldn’t determine the dose.
The injector should assess the individual patient.
Are Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Daxxify Units the Same? #
No. This is important.
Units of different botulinum toxin products are not interchangeable.
Don’t publish a simple universal conversion such as “1 Botox unit = X Dysport units” as though the products can be directly substituted based solely on a conversion formula.

How Much Does Botox Cost Based on Units? #
Botox pricing is often calculated based on the number of units used.
At AIVI Aesthetics, patients receive an individualized treatment plan based on the areas being treated and the amount of product recommended.

Botox Units FAQ #
Is 20 units of Botox a lot? #
Twenty units is the FDA-approved dose for treatment of moderate-to-severe glabellar lines in adults. Whether 20 units is appropriate for you depends on what is being treated.
Is 40 units of Botox a lot? #
Forty units can represent the FDA-approved combined dose for forehead and glabellar-line treatment. The number alone doesn’t tell you whether it is appropriate without knowing the treatment areas.
Is 50 units of Botox enough for three areas? #
Don’t determine a three-area treatment solely from a generic unit number. The appropriate dose depends on which three areas are being treated and the individual’s anatomy.
How often will I need Botox? #
Duration varies among patients. Link this answer to your separate How Long Does Botox Last? article rather than making this page about treatment frequency too.
