Will Microneedling Help With Smile Lines? #
If the lines around your mouth are becoming more noticeable, you may be wondering:
Will microneedling help with smile lines?
Yes, microneedling may help soften fine lines, improve crepey texture, and support collagen remodeling around the mouth.
But if by “smile lines” you mean deeper folds running from the sides of your nose toward the corners of your mouth—often called nasolabial folds—microneedling alone may not provide the correction you’re expecting.
That’s because a deep smile line isn’t always just a wrinkle in the skin.
It may also involve:
- Facial anatomy
- Volume changes
- Collagen loss
- Changes in cheek support
- Tissue descent
- Repetitive facial movement
- Skin quality
The first step is determining what kind of smile line you actually have.
What Are Smile Lines? #
“Smile lines” is a broad term patients use for several different concerns around the mouth.
You may be referring to:
Nasolabial Folds #
The folds extending from the sides of the nose toward the corners of the mouth.
Fine Perioral Lines #
Smaller wrinkles in the skin around the lips and mouth.
Marionette Lines #
Lines extending downward from the corners of the mouth toward the chin.
Dynamic Lines #
Lines that become more noticeable when smiling or moving your face.
These concerns aren’t identical.
And they shouldn’t automatically receive the same treatment.
How Does Microneedling Work on Smile Lines? #
Microneedling creates controlled microscopic injuries in the skin.
These microinjuries initiate a wound-healing response that supports collagen remodeling.
Over time, this may improve:
- Fine lines
- Crepey texture
- Roughness
- Early collagen loss
- Overall skin quality
If your smile lines are primarily caused by changes within the skin itself, microneedling may help soften their appearance.
If the fold is being created by deeper facial anatomy, the improvement may be more limited.
Can Microneedling Get Rid of Smile Lines? #
Microneedling can soften certain smile lines, but “get rid of” sets an unrealistic expectation.
Your face is designed to move.
Smiling naturally creates folds around the mouth.
The goal isn’t to remove every line that appears when you smile.
At AIVI Aesthetics, we focus on helping the skin look:
Healthier. Smoother. Refreshed. Natural.
Not frozen or expressionless.
Does Microneedling Help Nasolabial Folds? #
It may improve the skin quality over the fold, but microneedling doesn’t directly replace facial volume or reposition deeper tissue.
This distinction is important.
Imagine a fold in fabric.
Improving the quality of the fabric may make it look smoother.
But if the fold is being created by the structure underneath, treating the surface alone won’t completely eliminate it.
Nasolabial folds can become more noticeable because of changes in:
- Midface volume
- Cheek support
- Fat compartments
- Collagen
- Skin elasticity
- Facial structure
- Tissue position
Microneedling addresses primarily the skin component.
Is Microneedling Better for Fine Smile Lines? #
This is where microneedling may make more sense.
If you have early fine lines around the mouth combined with:
- Rough texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Sun damage
- Early collagen loss
- Crepey skin
microneedling can address several skin-quality concerns at the same time.
The improvement develops gradually as the skin remodels.
Will Microneedling Help Wrinkles Around the Mouth? #
Yes, certain fine wrinkles around the mouth may improve.
The mouth is a high-movement area, however.
Talking, smiling, eating, pursing the lips, and facial expressions continually move the skin.
That means microneedling cannot prevent every line from forming.
It can improve the quality of the skin, but it cannot stop normal facial movement.
Does Microneedling Help Lip Lines? #
Microneedling may soften fine vertical lines around the lips when collagen loss and skin texture are contributing.
These lines can develop from a combination of:
- Aging
- Collagen loss
- Repetitive movement
- Sun exposure
- Genetics
- Smoking history
If the lines are deeply etched, microneedling alone may not provide enough correction.
A stronger resurfacing treatment may sometimes be considered.
Does Microneedling Help Marionette Lines? #
Usually only to a limited degree if the marionette line is primarily structural.
Marionette lines can develop because of:
- Skin laxity
- Facial volume changes
- Tissue descent
- Chin and jawline anatomy
- Collagen loss
Microneedling may improve the skin over the area.
It cannot significantly reposition descended tissue.
This is why treating every lower-face line with the same procedure doesn’t work.
Microneedling vs Filler for Smile Lines #
Microneedling and filler solve different problems.
Microneedling #
Primarily addresses:
- Skin quality
- Fine lines
- Texture
- Collagen remodeling
Dermal Filler #
May be used in selected patients to address:
- Volume loss
- Structural support
- Contour changes
- Certain deeper folds
But this doesn’t mean the answer to every nasolabial fold is injecting filler directly into it.
Sometimes the fold is being influenced by changes elsewhere in the face.
Adding too much filler directly into a fold can create heaviness rather than a natural-looking improvement.
Treat the cause—not simply the line.
Do Smile Lines Always Need Filler? #
No.
This is particularly important for patients who want to look refreshed without looking overdone.
Sometimes the structure is fine.
The skin simply looks:
- Crepey
- Sun damaged
- Textured
- Thin
- Less elastic
In that situation, improving skin quality may provide a more natural-looking result than immediately adding volume.
Sometimes your facial structure is perfectly fine. It’s the skin that needs attention.
Microneedling vs Botox for Smile Lines #
Botox and other neuromodulators address muscle movement.
Microneedling addresses skin quality.
But nasolabial folds aren’t typically treated the same way as dynamic forehead lines or crow’s feet.
That’s why simply asking for “Botox for my smile lines” may not lead to the right treatment.
We first need to determine:
Is it movement?
Skin?
Volume?
Structure?
Or a combination?
Traditional Microneedling vs RF Microneedling for Smile Lines #
These treatments are related but not identical.
Traditional Microneedling #
May be considered for:
- Fine lines
- Rough texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Early collagen loss
- General skin rejuvenation
RF Microneedling #
Combines microneedles with radiofrequency energy for deeper controlled tissue remodeling.
At AIVI Aesthetics, we use Vivace RF Microneedling when deeper collagen remodeling is appropriate.
RF microneedling may be worth considering when fine lines occur alongside:
- Mild skin laxity
- Crepey skin
- More noticeable collagen loss
- Overall lower-face skin aging
But RF microneedling still doesn’t replace significant lost facial volume.
Microneedling vs CoolPeel for Smile Lines #
Both can improve skin quality, but they work differently.
Microneedling creates controlled mechanical microinjury.
CoolPeel uses fractional CO2 energy for lighter, more superficial resurfacing.
At AIVI Aesthetics, CoolPeel is treated as a distinct, lighter resurfacing option from our stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing.
CoolPeel may make sense when fine lines around the mouth occur alongside:
- Sun damage
- Rough texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Other superficial signs of aging
Microneedling may be preferred when collagen induction with less emphasis on laser resurfacing is the goal.
Is CO2 Laser Better for Deep Wrinkles Around the Mouth? #
For more established etched lines and significant photoaging, fractional CO2 resurfacing may provide a stronger resurfacing effect than traditional microneedling.
Stronger DEKA fractional CO2 may be considered when the concern includes:
- Deeper wrinkles
- Significant sun damage
- Pronounced texture
- Crepey skin
- More advanced photoaging
However, stronger resurfacing also comes with greater recovery.
And even an aggressive laser cannot completely correct a fold caused primarily by deeper structural changes.
The strongest treatment isn’t automatically the right treatment.
What About Sculptra or Radiesse? #
Biostimulatory treatments such as Sculptra or Radiesse may be considered in selected patients when broader collagen loss or facial support changes are contributing to the aged appearance.
These treatments work differently from microneedling.
Microneedling stimulates remodeling through controlled microinjury.
Biostimulatory injectables work within the tissue to encourage collagen production.
Neither should be selected simply because someone has a smile line.
The entire face needs to be assessed.
How Many Microneedling Sessions Do You Need for Smile Lines? #
There isn’t one universal number.
Many professional microneedling plans involve an initial series of approximately 3–6 sessions, often spaced several weeks apart.
The number depends on:
- Depth of the lines
- Skin quality
- Age
- Sun damage
- Type of microneedling
- Treatment intensity
- Individual response
Fine lines may respond differently than deeply established folds.
If you’ve completed several treatments and a deep fold remains unchanged, more microneedling may not be the solution.
Reassess the concern instead of automatically repeating the procedure.
Can One Microneedling Treatment Help Smile Lines? #
You may notice smoother-looking skin after one treatment.
But collagen remodeling is gradual.
A series is often considered when the goal is more meaningful improvement in fine lines and overall skin quality.
Don’t judge the treatment only a few days afterward.
The skin needs time to remodel.
How Long Does It Take to See Results? #
Microneedling isn’t an instant wrinkle treatment.
A general timeline may look like:
First few days: redness and early healing.
Several weeks: skin may begin looking smoother and more refined.
1–3 months: collagen remodeling continues.
Following months: additional improvement may develop after an appropriate series.
Your skin can look healed before it is finished improving.
How Long Do Results Last? #
Collagen-related improvements may remain noticeable for months or potentially longer.
But microneedling doesn’t stop:
- Facial movement
- Natural aging
- Collagen loss
- Sun damage
- Structural facial changes
Some patients eventually choose maintenance treatments.
That doesn’t mean the skin has become dependent on microneedling.
It simply continues to age.
Will My Smile Lines Come Back? #
Some degree of smile line will remain because your face continues to move.
And that’s normal.
The goal isn’t to eliminate every sign that you smile.
A natural face should still have expression.
Over time, aging and collagen changes can make lines more noticeable again.
Consistent sun protection and appropriate skincare can help protect the improvements you’ve made.
What Is the Best Treatment for Smile Lines? #
There isn’t one treatment that is best for everyone.
If the primary concern is:
Fine lines and skin texture: microneedling may make sense.
Fine lines plus mild laxity: RF microneedling may be considered.
Etched wrinkles and photoaging: CO2 resurfacing may provide stronger correction.
Volume or structural changes: carefully selected injectable treatments may be considered.
Significant tissue descent: nonsurgical treatments have limitations.
The best treatment depends on why the line exists.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling for Smile Lines? #
Microneedling may be a good option if your smile lines are accompanied by:
- Fine wrinkles
- Uneven texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Early collagen loss
- Crepey skin
- Mild photoaging
It may be less effective if your primary concern is a very deep structural nasolabial fold.
That’s why consultation matters.
So, Will Microneedling Help With Smile Lines? #
Yes, microneedling can help soften certain smile lines by improving collagen, texture, and overall skin quality.
It tends to make the most sense for:
- Fine lines around the mouth
- Early wrinkles
- Crepey texture
- Collagen loss
- General skin-quality concerns
But deeper nasolabial folds may involve facial volume, structural support, and tissue descent.
Microneedling can improve the skin covering the fold.
It cannot replace missing volume or significantly reposition deeper tissue.
The goal isn’t to erase your smile.
It’s to help the skin around it look healthier, smoother, and more refreshed.
A Skin-Forward Approach to Smile Lines at AIVI Aesthetics #
At AIVI Aesthetics, seeing a smile line doesn’t automatically mean reaching for filler.
First, we ask what is creating it.
If the problem is primarily fine lines and skin quality, traditional microneedling may make sense.
If deeper collagen loss and mild laxity are present, we may consider Vivace RF Microneedling.
If the skin has more established wrinkles and photoaging, CoolPeel or stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing may be discussed.
If facial volume or structural support is contributing, we can evaluate whether a carefully selected injectable treatment is appropriate.
And sometimes the answer is to leave a natural fold alone.
You don’t need to erase every line to look younger.
Our goal is to help you look rested, refreshed, healthy, and natural—not overfilled or overtreated.
