Is Microneedling 3 Times a Year Enough?

Is Microneedling 3 Times a Year Enough? #

If you’re using microneedling as part of your skin-maintenance routine, you may wonder:

Is microneedling three times a year enough?

For some patients, yes. Three microneedling treatments per year may be a reasonable maintenance schedule once you’ve already achieved your initial treatment goals.

But if you’re trying to actively correct concerns such as established acne scars, significant texture, or more noticeable collagen loss, three widely spaced treatments may not provide the same results as an appropriately planned initial series.

There isn’t one perfect number of microneedling treatments everyone needs.

The right frequency depends on what you’re treating, how your skin responds, and whether you’re in a correction or maintenance phase.

How Often Should You Get Microneedling? #

Professional microneedling is often performed as a treatment series when the goal is to create more noticeable correction.

Depending on the indication, device, treatment intensity, and individual healing response, treatments may be spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart during an initial series.

Once you’ve achieved the desired improvement, treatment frequency can often be reduced.

That’s when three treatments per year may make more sense.

Think of it as:

Correction phase ? treatments may be closer together

Maintenance phase ? treatments may be farther apart

You don’t necessarily need the same schedule forever.

Is Microneedling Every 4 Months Enough? #

Three treatments per year works out to approximately one treatment every four months.

For someone maintaining generally healthy skin, that may be plenty.

For example, this schedule may be reasonable if your goals are:

  • Maintaining smoother texture
  • Supporting collagen
  • Improving mild fine lines
  • Keeping enlarged-looking pores more refined
  • Supporting overall skin quality
  • Healthy-aging maintenance

If your skin already looks good, there is no reason to automatically increase treatment frequency simply because more appointments are available.

More treatment doesn’t automatically mean better skin.

Is 3 Microneedling Sessions Enough for Acne Scars? #

Possibly—but acne scars are different from general maintenance.

Some patients may notice meaningful improvement after three sessions.

Others may need additional treatments.

The response depends heavily on the type of scar.

Microneedling may be more helpful for certain:

  • Rolling scars
  • Shallow boxcar scars
  • Depressed acne scars
  • Post-acne texture

Deep ice-pick scars or tethered rolling scars may not respond adequately to microneedling alone.

In those cases, simply scheduling more microneedling isn’t necessarily the answer.

The scar may require another treatment strategy.

What If My Acne Scars Are Tethered? #

Some rolling acne scars are attached to deeper tissue by fibrous bands.

Those bands pull the skin downward.

Microneedling can stimulate collagen, but it does not necessarily release significant tethering underneath a scar.

For selected patients, subcision may need to be considered.

This is why we don’t determine acne-scar treatment simply by saying:

“You need six microneedling sessions.”

First determine the scar.

Then determine the treatment.

Is Microneedling 3 Times a Year Enough for Large Pores? #

It may be.

Microneedling can improve the collagen and texture surrounding enlarged-looking pores, making them appear more refined.

If you’ve already completed an initial treatment series and you’re happy with the improvement, three treatments per year may be a reasonable maintenance strategy.

But remember:

Microneedling does not permanently close pores.

Pore appearance is also influenced by:

  • Genetics
  • Oil production
  • Congestion
  • Acne
  • Sun damage
  • Collagen loss
  • Skin aging

Your daily skincare routine matters between procedures.

Is Microneedling 3 Times a Year Enough for Fine Lines? #

For mild fine lines and preventative skin maintenance, it may be.

If your lines are primarily related to skin quality and early collagen changes, occasional microneedling may help support smoother-looking skin.

But not every wrinkle is caused by collagen loss.

If the line appears when you:

  • Frown
  • Squint
  • Smile
  • Raise your eyebrows

muscle movement may be playing a larger role.

In that situation, simply increasing your microneedling frequency may not address the cause.

Microneedling ? skin quality

Botox ? movement

The treatment has to match the concern.

Is 3 Times a Year Enough for Anti-Aging? #

There is no medically required number of microneedling treatments you need every year to “prevent aging.”

Aging isn’t something you can stop by scheduling enough procedures.

Microneedling may support:

  • Collagen remodeling
  • Fine lines
  • Texture
  • Skin quality

But healthy aging also depends on daily habits, especially sun protection and appropriate skincare.

Someone with healthy skin and a good home routine may be perfectly satisfied with three treatments per year—or even fewer.

Another patient with significant acne scarring may need a more structured initial series.

Treat the skin—not the calendar.

Should You Get Microneedling Every Month? #

Not indefinitely.

During a corrective series, treatments may sometimes be spaced around a month or more apart depending on the treatment protocol.

But that doesn’t mean everyone should have monthly microneedling forever.

Your skin needs time to:

Heal ? remodel ? respond

before another treatment is automatically added.

Once you’ve reached your treatment goal, reassess.

Maintenance may require substantially fewer treatments.

Can You Microneedle Too Often? #

Yes, over-treatment is possible.

Repeatedly treating skin that hasn’t appropriately recovered can create unnecessary inflammation.

Potential problems may include:

  • Persistent redness
  • Irritation
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Barrier disruption
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Delayed healing
  • Other complications

More inflammation isn’t automatically more collagen.

There should be a reason for each treatment.

Is Twice a Year Enough? #

For some patients, yes.

If your skin is healthy and you’re simply maintaining results, you may not need three treatments.

Some patients may choose:

1–2 treatments per year

while others prefer:

3–4 treatments per year

There is no universal maintenance number.

Your schedule should depend on your skin rather than an arbitrary membership or package.

Do I Need Microneedling Every Year? #

No.

Microneedling isn’t something your skin becomes dependent on.

If you stop treatment, your skin doesn’t suddenly:

  • Lose all its collagen
  • Develop larger pores
  • Become more wrinkled overnight
  • Age faster

Your skin simply continues through its normal aging process.

You can return to microneedling later if another treatment is appropriate.

What Happens Between Microneedling Treatments? #

A lot.

The visible redness may resolve within days, but the biological remodeling process continues beyond the initial recovery period.

That’s why judging the treatment immediately after the redness disappears doesn’t tell you the full story.

Visible recovery happens in days.

Collagen remodeling happens over weeks and months.

Give your skin time to respond before deciding it needs another procedure.

Do More Microneedling Sessions Produce More Collagen? #

Not indefinitely.

There isn’t a simple equation where:

10 treatments = twice as much collagen as 5 treatments.

Biology doesn’t work that way.

At some point, additional treatment may provide diminishing benefit or another treatment modality may better address the remaining concern.

This is particularly important when treating acne scars.

If you’ve completed several microneedling sessions and one deep scar hasn’t changed, reconsider the scar rather than repeatedly needling it.

How Do I Know When I Need Another Microneedling Treatment? #

Instead of watching the calendar, look at your skin.

Ask:

  • Has my texture changed?
  • Are fine lines becoming more noticeable?
  • Are acne scars still improving?
  • Am I maintaining the result I wanted?
  • Is there actually something I want to correct?
  • Would another treatment work better?

If your skin looks healthy and you’re happy with it, you don’t automatically need another treatment.

Is 3 Times a Year Enough for Preventative Microneedling? #

It can be more than adequate for some patients.

Preventative aesthetics should focus on maintaining healthy skin rather than constantly treating normal skin because you’re afraid of aging.

For someone with minimal concerns, priorities may include:

  • Daily sunscreen
  • Appropriate skincare
  • Retinoids when appropriate
  • Antioxidants
  • Good barrier care
  • Occasional professional treatment

Procedures should support your skin-health routine—not become the entire routine.

What If 3 Microneedling Treatments Aren’t Enough? #

First determine why.

If your concern remains after several sessions, you may need:

Additional Microneedling #

Appropriate when the skin is responding but the treatment goal hasn’t yet been reached.

RF Microneedling #

May be considered when deeper collagen remodeling or mild laxity is part of the concern.

At AIVI Aesthetics, we use Vivace RF Microneedling when appropriate.

Subcision #

May be considered for certain tethered acne scars.

Fractional CO2 Resurfacing #

May make more sense when more significant resurfacing is needed for established texture, wrinkles, photoaging, or certain acne scars.

At AIVI Aesthetics, CoolPeel is our lighter, more superficial CO2 resurfacing option.

Our stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing is a separate treatment designed for deeper, more customizable correction when appropriate.

Sometimes the answer isn’t more microneedling.

It’s a different treatment.

Traditional Microneedling vs RF Microneedling for Maintenance #

These treatments shouldn’t automatically follow the same maintenance schedule.

Traditional Microneedling #

May be useful for:

  • General skin quality
  • Fine lines
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Certain acne scars
  • Texture

RF Microneedling #

Adds radiofrequency energy for deeper controlled tissue remodeling and may be considered for:

  • Mild laxity
  • Crepey skin
  • Certain acne scars
  • More established collagen concerns

RF microneedling isn’t simply “stronger microneedling.”

The treatment response, intensity, and appropriate intervals can differ.

What Is a Good Microneedling Schedule? #

Instead of giving every patient the same annual schedule, think in phases.

Phase 1: Correct #

If you have an established concern such as acne scarring or significant texture, an initial series may be appropriate.

Phase 2: Reassess #

After the series, allow time for remodeling and evaluate the result.

Phase 3: Maintain #

If you’re happy with your skin, treatment frequency may decrease substantially.

For some patients, three treatments per year may be appropriate.

For others, one or two may be enough.

And some may not need maintenance treatment at all for a period of time.

So, Is Microneedling 3 Times a Year Enough? #

Yes, three microneedling treatments per year may be enough for many patients who are using microneedling for maintenance after achieving their initial treatment goals.

But three sessions per year may not be the ideal schedule if you’re actively treating:

  • Established acne scars
  • Significant texture
  • More noticeable collagen loss
  • A specific corrective concern

In those cases, a structured initial series may be more appropriate before transitioning into maintenance.

The biggest mistake is assuming everyone needs the same number of treatments.

Correction and maintenance are not the same thing.

Once your skin looks healthy and you’ve reached your goal, you don’t need to keep treating it simply because another appointment is due.

A Skin-Forward Approach to Microneedling at AIVI Aesthetics #

At AIVI Aesthetics, we don’t believe you automatically need monthly microneedling—or even three treatments every year.

We start by asking:

What are we actually trying to improve?

If you’re treating acne scars or established texture, SkinPen microneedling may be performed as a structured series.

If deeper collagen remodeling or mild laxity is the concern, Vivace RF Microneedling may make more sense.

If your skin has more established sun damage, wrinkles, or textural changes, CoolPeel or stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing may be considered.

And if you’ve already reached your goal?

Sometimes the recommendation is simply:

Maintain your skincare. Protect your skin from the sun. Enjoy your results.

You don’t need a procedure just because another season has passed.

Maintain early. Treat when needed. Escalate only when the skin requires it.

Our goal is skin that looks healthy, rested, refreshed, polished, and natural—not overtreated.
