But skin texture isn’t only about what’s happening on the surface.

Clinical research on injectable polynucleotides has also reported improvements in skin texture and elasticity, although the evidence is still developing.

What Is PDRN? #

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide.

It consists of purified DNA fragments, traditionally derived from salmonid sources, and has a history of research involving tissue repair and wound healing.

In aesthetics, PDRN has become popular because of its potential regenerative effects on the skin.

Instead of primarily adding volume like dermal filler or relaxing muscles like Botox, PDRN treatments focus more on skin quality.

Depending on the treatment and patient, PDRN may be considered for concerns such as:

  • Uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines
  • Crepey-looking skin
  • Dehydration
  • Reduced elasticity
  • Dull-looking skin
  • Overall skin quality

1. PDRN May Support Fibroblast Activity #

One of the most important cells involved in healthy-looking skin is the fibroblast.

Fibroblasts help produce components of the extracellular matrix, including collagen.

As skin ages—and particularly with chronic sun exposure—fibroblast function and extracellular-matrix organization can become impaired.

Laboratory research has found that PDRN can promote fibroblast proliferation and migration and increase collagen accumulation through cellular signaling pathways.

Why does that matter for texture?

Because healthier dermal support can contribute to skin that appears:

Smoother. Firmer. More resilient. More refined.

PDRN isn’t simply trying to temporarily make the surface look shiny or hydrated. The interest in PDRN comes from its potential effects on the biological processes involved in skin repair.

2. PDRN May Support Collagen Production #

Collagen provides much of the structural framework within the skin.

As collagen gradually declines with aging and UV exposure, you may begin noticing:

  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Rougher texture
  • Crepey skin
  • Reduced firmness

Research in human skin cells has found that PDRN can increase collagen accumulation in fibroblasts. Other recent research has also demonstrated effects on signaling pathways and extracellular-matrix components involved in dermal repair.

This is one reason PDRN is being investigated as a regenerative skin treatment.

However, it is important to put this into perspective.

PDRN shouldn’t automatically be considered equivalent to more intensive collagen-remodeling treatments such as RF microneedling or CO2 laser resurfacing.

Different treatments stimulate and remodel the skin in different ways.

3. PDRN May Improve Skin Hydration #

Texture isn’t always caused by scarring or collagen loss.

Sometimes skin simply becomes dehydrated.

When the skin lacks adequate hydration, fine lines and roughness can become more noticeable.

Clinical studies included in a systematic review of injectable polynucleotides reported improvements in hydration as well as texture-related measurements. In one study summarized by the review, the PN group demonstrated greater hydration improvement than a hyaluronic-acid comparison group at a 16-week assessment.

Better hydration can help the skin look:

  • Plumper
  • Smoother
  • Softer
  • More radiant
  • Less crepey

This is why someone with dehydrated, thin-looking skin may require a different treatment strategy from someone with deep acne scars.

4. PDRN May Improve the Appearance of Pores #

Pores are normal—you can’t permanently erase them.

But they can become more noticeable when the surrounding skin loses elasticity and structural support.

Oil production, genetics, acne, sun damage, and collagen loss can all influence their appearance.

Interestingly, research summarized in a systematic review found improvements in pore volume following polynucleotide treatment, with some improvements becoming more noticeable over time.

This doesn’t mean PDRN is a cure for enlarged pores.

But improving the quality and support of the surrounding skin may help create a more refined overall texture.

5. PDRN Supports Skin Repair #

Another reason PDRN has generated so much interest is its history in tissue-repair research.

PDRN has been studied in wound-healing settings, including a randomized pilot study in skin-graft donor sites that found faster re-epithelialization in the PDRN group.

Laboratory research has also shown effects on the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts and keratinocytes—two cell types involved in skin repair.

This regenerative component is part of why PDRN is different from simply exfoliating the skin’s surface.

6. Skin Texture May Continue Improving Gradually #

PDRN isn’t necessarily an immediate-results treatment.

Immediately after injections, the skin may actually look temporarily less smooth because of:

  • Small injection-site bumps
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness

Those aren’t the final results.

Changes associated with skin remodeling take time.

A systematic review found that improvements in skin texture were often more noticeable over the weeks and months following polynucleotide treatments. Some studies reported significant improvements around three months, and certain improvements remained measurable at later follow-ups.

This is why regenerative treatments should generally be evaluated over time rather than immediately after the appointment.

Can PDRN Help Rough Skin? #

Potentially, depending on why your skin feels rough.

If roughness is associated with dehydration, early collagen changes, reduced elasticity, or overall declining skin quality, PDRN may be worth discussing.

But rough texture can also result from:

  • Dead skin-cell buildup
  • Acne
  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage
  • Enlarged pores
  • Keratosis
  • Certain skin conditions

PDRN isn’t automatically the best treatment for every cause.

Sometimes a chemical peel, retinoid, microneedling, laser treatment, or better home skincare routine makes more sense.

Can PDRN Improve Acne-Scar Texture? #

PDRN may potentially support skin regeneration, but significant acne scarring usually requires a more targeted approach.

Acne scars can include:

Rolling scars

Boxcar scars

Ice-pick scars

Each type behaves differently.

For more noticeable atrophic acne scars, treatments such as microneedling, RF microneedling, CO2 laser resurfacing, subcision, or combination therapy may provide more direct structural remodeling.

PDRN may potentially complement a broader regenerative plan, but we shouldn’t expect it to erase deep scars by itself.

PDRN vs Microneedling for Skin Texture #

Both treatments may improve texture, but they work differently.

PDRN injections focus on providing regenerative support within the skin.

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing and collagen-remodeling response.

If your skin is thin, crepey, or dehydrated, PDRN may be interesting.

If you have more noticeable enlarged pores, acne scars, or uneven texture, microneedling may provide more direct remodeling.

Some patients may eventually incorporate both approaches into a broader skin plan, but combination treatments should be selected appropriately rather than assuming more treatment is always better.

PDRN vs CO2 Laser for Skin Texture #

If you have substantial sun damage, wrinkles, or more significant textural irregularities, CO2 laser resurfacing is a much more intensive resurfacing treatment.

CO2 laser creates controlled thermal injury that stimulates significant skin renewal and collagen remodeling.

That generally means more downtime—but also potentially more substantial correction for appropriately selected patients.

PDRN is a different type of treatment.

Rather than aggressively resurfacing the skin, the goal is more focused on regenerative skin-quality support.

Which treatment makes sense depends on how much correction you actually need.

How Many PDRN Treatments Are Needed for Texture? #

There isn’t one universally established treatment schedule for every PDRN product and every patient.

Research involving injectable polynucleotides has used different treatment protocols, injection techniques, and treatment areas. A systematic review found promising results but also emphasized that there is still limited consensus regarding optimal treatment protocols.

Your treatment plan should depend on:

  • Starting skin quality
  • Age
  • Degree of texture change
  • Treatment area
  • Specific product
  • Other treatments being performed
  • Individual response

The goal shouldn’t simply be to complete a package.

Your skin should be reassessed along the way.

Does PDRN Permanently Fix Skin Texture? #

No treatment permanently stops skin aging.

Collagen continues to change.

UV exposure continues to affect the skin.

Hormones, genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors continue to influence skin quality.

PDRN should therefore be thought of as part of a long-term skin-maintenance strategy, not a permanent cure for texture.

Daily sunscreen and an appropriate skincare routine remain extremely important.

What Does the Research Say About PDRN and Skin Texture? #

The current evidence is promising, but still developing.

A systematic review identified nine studies involving 219 patients treated with injectable polynucleotides. Several studies reported statistically significant improvements in skin texture, wrinkles, and elasticity.

However, the researchers rated the available evidence as low to moderate quality and noted considerable differences in treatment techniques and protocols.

That’s an important distinction.

There is legitimate scientific interest behind PDRN and polynucleotide treatments—but we shouldn’t describe them as a miracle solution for every skin concern.

So, How Do PDRN Injections Improve Skin Texture? #

PDRN injections may improve skin texture by supporting several processes involved in healthier-looking skin, including:

  • Fibroblast activity
  • Collagen production
  • Extracellular-matrix remodeling
  • Hydration
  • Tissue repair
  • Skin elasticity

Together, these changes may help skin appear smoother, more hydrated, more resilient, and more refined over time.

But the best treatment still depends on what is causing your texture.

If your concern is mild crepiness and declining skin quality, regenerative treatments may make sense.

If you have deep acne scars, advanced sun damage, or significant collagen loss, a more intensive treatment may provide better correction.
