What Microneedling Does: How It Works and What It Can Improve #
If you’ve heard about microneedling but aren’t exactly sure what it does, the simplest explanation is:
Microneedling creates controlled microscopic injuries in the skin to activate a natural healing and collagen-remodeling response.
Over time, this process can help improve concerns such as:
- Uneven skin texture
- Fine lines
- Certain acne scars
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Early collagen loss
- Mild crepey texture
- Overall skin quality
Microneedling doesn’t add volume to your face, freeze facial movement, or peel away layers of skin like a resurfacing laser.
Instead, it encourages your skin to repair and remodel itself.
How Does Microneedling Work? #
During a professional microneedling treatment, very small sterile needles create controlled microchannels in the skin.
These microinjuries initiate the body’s wound-healing response.
The goal isn’t to damage the skin unnecessarily.
The goal is to create a controlled amount of stimulation that encourages repair and collagen remodeling.
This is why microneedling is also called collagen induction therapy.
What Does Microneedling Do to Collagen? #
Collagen provides structural support to the skin.
As we age, collagen production and organization change. Sun exposure and other environmental factors can also contribute to collagen breakdown.
Microneedling stimulates a healing response that includes new collagen formation and remodeling.
That process happens gradually.
You shouldn’t expect to walk out of a microneedling appointment with your final result.
Think:
Treatment ? healing ? collagen production ? remodeling ? gradual improvement
Does Microneedling Make Your Skin Look Younger? #
It can help the skin look smoother, healthier, and more refreshed.
Microneedling may improve several changes associated with aging, including:
- Fine lines
- Rough texture
- Early collagen loss
- Mild crepey skin
- Uneven skin quality
But it doesn’t stop aging.
And it doesn’t need to change your facial features to make your skin look better.
For many patients, that’s exactly the appeal.
You still look like yourself—just with healthier-looking skin.
What Does Microneedling Do for Fine Lines? #
Microneedling can help soften certain fine lines by improving collagen support and skin texture.
But not every wrinkle is primarily a skin-quality problem.
For example, forehead lines and crow’s feet can be strongly influenced by repetitive facial movement.
In that situation:
Neuromodulators ? address movement
Microneedling ? addresses skin quality
If a line has become etched into the skin, improving skin quality may still be useful.
The treatment should match what’s actually causing the wrinkle.
What Does Microneedling Do for Acne Scars? #
Microneedling is commonly used to improve certain atrophic acne scars, which are depressed scars caused by changes in collagen after acne.
By stimulating remodeling within and around the scar, microneedling may help make some scars:
- Shallower
- Softer
- Less noticeable
- Better blended with surrounding skin
But microneedling does not completely erase every acne scar.
And scar type matters.
Which Acne Scars Respond to Microneedling? #
Not every acne scar behaves the same way.
Rolling Scars #
Some rolling scars may improve with collagen remodeling.
However, scars tethered to deeper tissue may require subcision to release the attachment underneath.
Boxcar Scars #
Certain shallow boxcar scars may respond to microneedling.
Deeper scars can be more challenging.
Ice-Pick Scars #
Deep, narrow ice-pick scars may require a more scar-specific treatment approach.
This is why acne-scar treatment should start with identifying the scar—not simply choosing a device.
The treatment has to match the scar.
Does Microneedling Help Large Pores? #
Microneedling can improve the appearance of enlarged pores.
It doesn’t physically eliminate or permanently close pores.
Pores are normal structures in your skin.
By improving collagen support and surrounding texture, microneedling may make them look more refined and less noticeable.
The realistic goal is:
Smaller-looking pores—not poreless skin.
Does Microneedling Improve Skin Texture? #
Yes. Texture is one of the concerns for which microneedling is commonly considered.
It may help improve skin that appears:
- Rough
- Uneven
- Mildly crepey
- Scarred
- Less smooth with age
As remodeling occurs, the surface may gradually appear smoother and more refined.
Does Microneedling Tighten Skin? #
Traditional microneedling may provide some improvement in collagen support and mild firmness.
But it should not be confused with a facelift or significant skin-tightening procedure.
If deeper collagen loss or mild skin laxity is the primary concern, RF microneedling may be more appropriate.
RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy to the treatment for deeper controlled thermal remodeling.
What Is RF Microneedling? #
RF microneedling combines two technologies:
Microneedles + radiofrequency energy
The needles enter the skin while controlled RF energy is delivered into targeted tissue.
This creates a different tissue response from traditional microneedling alone.
At AIVI Aesthetics, we use Vivace RF Microneedling when deeper collagen remodeling is appropriate.
It may be considered for:
- Mild skin laxity
- Crepey skin
- Fine lines
- Certain acne scars
- Texture
- Collagen loss
Traditional microneedling and RF microneedling are not interchangeable.
One isn’t automatically better.
It depends on the concern.
Does Microneedling Help Jowls? #
Microneedling may improve skin quality and mild firmness around the lower face, but traditional microneedling cannot lift significant jowls.
If early jowling is partly caused by skin laxity, RF microneedling may be more relevant because it provides deeper collagen remodeling.
But significant jowling can also involve:
- Tissue descent
- Facial fat changes
- Structural changes
- Volume loss
- Skin laxity
Microneedling cannot reposition significantly descended facial tissue.
Improving skin and lifting facial anatomy are not the same thing.
Does Microneedling Add Volume to Your Face? #
No.
Microneedling stimulates collagen within the skin, but it isn’t a filler.
If your concern is significant facial volume loss, microneedling alone will not restore:
- Cheek projection
- Chin structure
- Jawline structure
- Significant lost facial volume
That may require an entirely different treatment strategy.
Sometimes your structure is fine and the skin needs attention.
Other times, the structure itself has changed.
That’s why facial assessment matters.
Does Microneedling Help Hyperpigmentation? #
This requires a more thoughtful answer.
Microneedling may be incorporated into certain treatment plans for uneven skin tone, but not every brown spot is the same.
Pigmentation may represent:
- Sun damage
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Melasma
- Other pigmented lesions
These conditions shouldn’t automatically receive the same treatment.
Melasma, in particular, requires careful management because inflammation and heat can potentially contribute to worsening in susceptible patients.
Diagnose the pigment before treating the pigment.
Does Microneedling Help Sun Damage? #
Microneedling may improve some of the textural and collagen-related changes associated with photoaging.
However, significant pigmentation, established wrinkles, and advanced sun damage may respond better to other treatments.
This is where treatments such as CoolPeel or stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing may be considered.
Microneedling vs CoolPeel: What Is the Difference? #
Both can improve skin quality, but they work differently.
Microneedling #
Uses controlled mechanical microinjury to stimulate collagen remodeling.
It may be useful for:
- Texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Fine lines
- Certain acne scars
- General collagen induction
CoolPeel #
Uses controlled fractional CO2 laser energy for superficial skin resurfacing.
It may be considered when surface concerns such as:
- Fine lines
- Sun damage
- Texture
- Pore appearance
are more prominent.
At AIVI Aesthetics, CoolPeel is our lighter, more superficial CO2 resurfacing option and is distinct from stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing.
Microneedling vs Stronger CO2 Resurfacing #
Stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing creates a more intensive resurfacing response than traditional microneedling.
It may make more sense when someone has:
- Established wrinkles
- Significant sun damage
- More advanced photoaging
- Certain acne scars
- Pronounced crepey texture
But greater correction generally means more recovery.
Microneedling may be a better fit when the concern can be addressed with a more gradual collagen-induction approach and less visible downtime.
Deeper isn’t automatically better.
The intensity needs to match the concern.
Microneedling vs Botox: What Does Each Do? #
These treatments address completely different components of facial aging.
Microneedling #
Improves skin quality.
Botox and Other Neuromodulators #
Reduce muscle movement responsible for expression lines.
If you’re bothered by forehead lines because your forehead muscles repeatedly crease the skin, microneedling alone may not solve the underlying problem.
If you’re bothered by rough texture and early etched lines, microneedling may address another component.
Combination treatment may sometimes be appropriate.
Microneedling vs Filler: What Does Each Do? #
Again, different problems.
Microneedling #
Targets:
- Skin quality
- Texture
- Collagen
- Certain scars
Filler #
Targets selected areas of:
- Volume loss
- Structural support
- Facial contour
If your facial structure is already balanced but your skin looks rough, crepey, or scarred, adding filler may not be what you need.
Sometimes your facial structure is perfectly fine. It’s the skin that needs attention.
What Does PRF Microneedling Do? #
PRF, or platelet-rich fibrin, may be incorporated into certain microneedling treatment plans as an adjunct.
PRF is prepared from the patient’s own blood and contains platelets and other components involved in the body’s natural healing process.
At AIVI Aesthetics, treatment recommendations are based on whether an adjunct meaningfully fits the patient’s skin goals rather than automatically adding it to every microneedling session.
How Many Microneedling Sessions Do You Need? #
For many patients, an initial corrective series may involve approximately 3–6 sessions, although this varies.
Someone treating mild texture may need fewer treatments.
Someone treating established acne scars may require multiple sessions or combination therapy.
Instead of deciding everyone needs the same package, reassess after treatment:
What improved?
What remains?
Is microneedling still the best treatment for what remains?
How Often Should You Get Microneedling? #
Professional microneedling treatments are often spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart during an initial series.
This allows time for healing and collagen remodeling.
Your skin may look normal again within several days, but that doesn’t mean the remodeling process has finished.
Looking healed and being finished remodeling are two different things.
How Long Is Microneedling Recovery? #
Traditional microneedling generally has relatively manageable visible recovery.
Many patients experience redness for approximately 1–3 days, with possible dryness, tightness, sensitivity, or mild flaking for several additional days.
Recovery depends on:
- Treatment intensity
- Skin sensitivity
- Treatment area
- Device
- Individual healing
Deeper treatment may produce more visible recovery.
When Do Microneedling Results Show? #
Results are gradual.
A simple way to think about the timeline is:
Days ? recovery
Weeks ? early skin-quality improvement
Months ? continued collagen remodeling
You may notice smoother-looking skin relatively early, while scar and collagen changes require more patience.
How Long Do Microneedling Results Last? #
Microneedling doesn’t suddenly “wear off” on a particular date.
The collagen remodeling created by treatment can produce improvements that remain noticeable for months or potentially longer.
Certain acne-scar improvements may be particularly long-lasting.
But microneedling doesn’t stop:
- Natural aging
- Future collagen loss
- Sun damage
- New acne
- New wrinkles
Some patients therefore choose occasional maintenance treatments.
What Microneedling Cannot Do #
Understanding the limitations is just as important as understanding the benefits.
Microneedling cannot:
- Completely erase every acne scar
- Permanently eliminate pores
- Replace significant facial volume
- Stop facial muscle movement
- Lift significant jowls
- Reposition descended facial tissue
- Produce a surgical facelift result
- Permanently stop skin aging
If a treatment isn’t designed to solve your problem, doing more sessions won’t change its limitations.
Is Microneedling Worth It? #
For the right patient, microneedling can be an excellent skin-focused treatment.
It may be particularly appealing if you want to improve:
- Texture
- Pores
- Fine lines
- Certain acne scars
- Collagen quality
without significantly changing your facial features.
But it shouldn’t be performed simply because microneedling is popular.
The better question is:
Is microneedling the right treatment for my skin concern?
Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling? #
Microneedling may be considered for patients bothered by concerns such as:
- Uneven texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Fine lines
- Certain acne scars
- Early collagen loss
However, candidacy also depends on medical history, active skin conditions, abnormal scarring history, medications, healing, and other individual factors.
An appropriate assessment should come before treatment.
A Skin-Forward Approach to Microneedling at AIVI Aesthetics #
At AIVI Aesthetics, we don’t begin with:
“Which procedure can we sell you?”
We begin with:
“What is actually bothering you?”
If the problem is texture, pores, or certain acne scars, SkinPen microneedling may make sense.
If deeper collagen loss or mild laxity is the concern, Vivace RF Microneedling may be more appropriate.
If a scar is tethered, subcision may need to be considered.
If significant sun damage or established wrinkles are the primary issue, CoolPeel or stronger DEKA fractional CO2 resurfacing may provide more meaningful correction.
And if your facial structure is already balanced, you may not need more filler at all.
The treatment has to match the concern.
Our goal isn’t to make you look different.
It’s to help your skin look healthier, smoother, refreshed, and natural.
