What Not to Do After a CoolPeel #
CoolPeel is known for offering fractional CO2 resurfacing with a more manageable recovery, but low downtime doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need aftercare.
Immediately after treatment, your skin has undergone controlled fractional resurfacing. Redness and warmth may occur for a day or two, and as the skin heals it may become dry or scaly.
What you do during this recovery period matters.
In general, after CoolPeel you should avoid picking or peeling the skin, unnecessary sun exposure, irritating skincare products, aggressive exfoliation, and anything your provider has specifically asked you to temporarily stop.
You should also be cautious about activities that create significant heat, sweating, or friction during the early healing period.
Your exact restrictions depend on your treatment intensity and your provider’s instructions.
Here’s what you should know.
1. Don’t Pick, Scratch, or Peel Your Skin #
This is one of the most important CoolPeel aftercare rules.
During the first several days, your skin may begin feeling:
- Dry
- Tight
- Rough
- Scaly
- Like fine sandpaper
You may also notice mild flaking as the skin heals.
It can be tempting to rub or peel away the rough skin.
Don’t.
Allow it to shed naturally.
Picking at healing skin can potentially increase the risk of:
- Irritation
- Prolonged redness
- Pigmentation changes
- Infection
- Delayed healing
- Scarring
More peeling doesn’t mean better results.
Your skin is going through a controlled healing process. Give it time.
2. Don’t Exfoliate After CoolPeel #
Your skin doesn’t need additional exfoliation immediately after laser resurfacing.
CoolPeel has already created controlled microscopic treatment zones.
Avoid trying to “speed up” the peeling process with:
- Facial scrubs
- Exfoliating brushes
- Cleansing devices
- Glycolic acid
- Salicylic acid
- Lactic acid
- Exfoliating toners
- At-home peels
- Enzyme exfoliants
Even products you normally tolerate may be too irritating for freshly treated skin.
Your goal during early recovery should be:
Protect. Hydrate. Heal.
Not exfoliate.
3. Don’t Use Retinol Immediately After CoolPeel #
Retinoids are excellent long-term skincare ingredients for many patients.
But immediately after CoolPeel isn’t the time to restart them.
This includes products such as:
- Retinol
- Retinal
- Tretinoin
- Adapalene
- Other prescription retinoids
These ingredients can be irritating while your skin barrier is recovering.
Your provider should tell you when it’s appropriate to restart them based on how your skin is healing.
Don’t assume that because your skin looks normal on the surface, it is automatically ready for your entire skincare routine.
4. Don’t Use Strong Skincare Actives Too Soon #
Retinol isn’t the only ingredient that may need to be temporarily paused.
Depending on your skin and your provider’s instructions, you may also need to avoid irritating actives such as:
- AHAs
- BHAs
- Strong vitamin C formulations
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Hydroquinone
- Exfoliating acids
- Prescription acne products
- Brightening products that cause irritation
This doesn’t mean these products are bad.
Many can be valuable parts of a long-term skincare routine.
They simply may not belong on freshly resurfaced skin.
Good skincare also means knowing when to stop using active ingredients temporarily.
5. Don’t Spend Unnecessary Time in Direct Sun #
Sun protection is especially important after fractional CO2 resurfacing.
Recently treated skin can be more vulnerable to irritation and unwanted pigmentation.
Excessive UV exposure during recovery may increase concern for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and can undermine the reason you had the treatment in the first place.
If you’re treating sun damage and then immediately exposing your skin to more UV radiation, you’re working against your own treatment.
Avoid intentional tanning and unnecessary direct sun exposure while your skin heals.
6. Don’t Assume Sunscreen Makes Unlimited Sun Exposure Okay #
Sunscreen is important.
But sunscreen doesn’t mean:
“I can spend six hours at the beach immediately after my laser.”
After resurfacing, sun protection may involve a combination of:
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen when appropriate
- Hats
- Shade
- Limiting unnecessary direct sunlight
- Avoiding tanning
- Reapplying sunscreen appropriately
Follow your provider’s specific recommendations about when and how to apply products after treatment.
7. Don’t Schedule a Beach Vacation Immediately After CoolPeel #
Timing matters.
Immediately after CoolPeel probably isn’t the ideal time for:
- Hawaii
- Mexico
- Tropical vacations
- Beach weekends
- Pool days
- Outdoor festivals
- Long hiking trips
Even if you’re committed to sunscreen, these environments make controlling sun and heat exposure much more difficult.
If you have an upcoming vacation, tell your provider before scheduling treatment.
Sometimes waiting until after your trip is the smarter choice.
8. Don’t Intentionally Tan #
Avoid intentional tanning after CoolPeel.
That includes:
- Sun tanning
- Tanning beds
- Deliberate prolonged UV exposure
UV exposure contributes to:
- Collagen breakdown
- Pigmentation
- Uneven skin tone
- Photoaging
If one of your goals with CoolPeel is treating signs of sun damage, tanning afterward defeats part of that purpose.
9. Don’t Use Very Hot Water on Your Face #
Your skin may already feel warm or sensitive immediately after CoolPeel.
Very hot water can make that sensation more uncomfortable and potentially increase irritation.
Use gentle cleansing according to your provider’s instructions and avoid aggressively washing the treated area.
Your face doesn’t need to feel “squeaky clean.”
It needs to heal.
10. Don’t Take a Hot Shower Directly on the Treated Area #
A normal shower may be fine depending on your provider’s instructions, but avoid directing very hot water onto freshly treated facial skin.
During early recovery, keep things gentle.
That means avoiding unnecessary:
- Heat
- Steam
- Friction
- Scrubbing
Your skin barrier is temporarily more sensitive.
11. Don’t Use Saunas or Steam Rooms Too Soon #
Saunas and steam rooms create significant heat.
During the early healing period, excessive heat may increase:
- Redness
- Warmth
- Swelling
- Irritation
- Discomfort
Give your skin time to recover before returning to high-heat environments.
Ask your provider when it’s appropriate to resume them based on the intensity of your treatment.
12. Don’t Rush Back Into Intense Exercise #
Exercise isn’t permanently off limits after CoolPeel.
But immediately after treatment, intense workouts can create:
- Heat
- Sweating
- Facial flushing
- Friction
If your skin is already red, warm, and sensitive, a high-intensity workout may make it feel more irritated.
Your provider may recommend temporarily avoiding strenuous exercise during the early recovery period.
Follow the instructions given for your specific treatment.
13. Don’t Rub Sweat Off Your Face #
When you do return to exercise, avoid aggressively rubbing or wiping the treated skin.
Friction can irritate healing skin.
If you need to remove sweat, be gentle.
This is another reason waiting until the initial sensitivity settles can make recovery easier.
14. Don’t Go Swimming Immediately After CoolPeel #
Ask your provider before returning to:
- Swimming pools
- Hot tubs
- Oceans
- Lakes
Freshly treated skin should be allowed to heal appropriately.
Pools and hot tubs also introduce chemicals, heat, and microorganisms that may not be ideal for a compromised skin barrier.
This is especially important if the skin hasn’t fully re-epithelialized.
15. Don’t Apply Random Products Because Your Skin Feels Dry #
Dryness is common after CoolPeel.
Cartessa specifically notes that skin may feel dry and scaly during healing and recommends keeping it hydrated.
But this isn’t the time to open your bathroom cabinet and start experimenting.
A product that feels soothing on normal skin may contain:
- Fragrance
- Acids
- Essential oils
- Retinol
- Alcohol
- Other potentially irritating ingredients
Use the post-treatment products recommended by your provider.
Keep your routine simple.
16. Don’t Over-Moisturize With Products You Weren’t Told to Use #
Moisture and barrier support are important.
But more products aren’t automatically better.
Applying multiple heavy products, oils, masks, serums, and occlusives without guidance may irritate your skin or contribute to breakouts in some patients.
Follow the specific post-laser regimen you’ve been given.
17. Don’t Use Makeup Too Soon #
When you can safely return to makeup depends on your treatment intensity and how quickly your skin heals.
Don’t cover freshly treated, irritated skin simply because you have somewhere to go.
If your provider has instructed you to wait before applying makeup, follow that recommendation.
Once makeup is resumed, clean applicators and gentle products are particularly important.
18. Don’t Use Dirty Makeup Brushes #
When you’re cleared to resume makeup, don’t immediately use brushes and sponges that haven’t been cleaned recently.
Healing skin deserves a clean environment.
Wash reusable applicators appropriately and avoid sharing makeup.
19. Don’t Shave or Wax Irritated Skin #
Hair-removal methods can create additional irritation.
Be cautious with:
- Waxing
- Threading
- Dermaplaning
- Facial shaving
- Depilatory creams
Do not perform these over skin that is still red, peeling, tender, or irritated.
Ask your provider when your skin is ready.
20. Don’t Get Another Aggressive Facial Immediately #
After CoolPeel, your skin needs recovery—not another treatment the next day.
Avoid immediately stacking procedures such as:
- Chemical peels
- Aggressive facials
- Dermaplaning
- Microneedling
- RF microneedling
- Additional resurfacing lasers
Combination treatment can be useful when it is intentionally planned.
Randomly stacking treatments during the healing period is different.
More treatment doesn’t automatically mean better results.
21. Don’t Try to Speed Up Your Recovery #
Patients sometimes become impatient around days two through four.
The skin may look darker, feel dry, or develop that characteristic rough texture.
You may think:
“How can I get this off faster?”
The answer is usually:
Don’t.
Don’t scrub it.
Don’t peel it.
Don’t use acids.
Don’t aggressively wash it.
Let your skin complete its natural healing process.
22. Don’t Panic About the Sandpaper Texture #
The rough texture can surprise first-time CoolPeel patients.
Your skin may feel different before it looks dramatically different.
That doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.
Cartessa notes that treated skin may become dry and scaly as it heals.
The texture should gradually improve as the skin recovers.
However, if something feels significantly different from what your provider told you to expect, contact the practice rather than trying to treat it yourself.
23. Don’t Compare Your Recovery to Someone on Instagram #
CoolPeel can be customized.
DEKA’s Tetra PRO technology allows providers to adjust factors affecting vaporization depth and thermal effect, meaning two patients described as having a CO2 treatment may not have received identical treatment intensities.
One person may look almost normal quickly.
Another may have more:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Dryness
- Roughness
Your recovery depends on your skin and the treatment performed.
Follow your instructions.
24. Don’t Assume “Low Downtime” Means “No Downtime” #
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about CoolPeel.
CoolPeel was developed to provide CO2 resurfacing with greater control over downtime. DEKA describes the technology as allowing treatment of superficial skin while controlling vaporization depth and thermal effects.
That doesn’t mean nothing happened to your skin.
CoolPeel is still an ablative fractional CO2 treatment.
You may experience temporary:
- Redness
- Warmth
- Dryness
- Roughness
- Flaking
- Sensitivity
Treat your skin accordingly.
25. Don’t Ignore Signs That Something May Be Wrong #
Most CoolPeel recovery is relatively straightforward, but complications are possible after any ablative laser treatment.
Contact your provider if you experience symptoms that are unexpected or worsening, particularly:
- Increasing rather than improving pain
- Significant blistering
- Drainage
- Spreading redness
- Increasing swelling
- Signs of infection
- New sores or blisters
- Delayed healing
- Concerning or persistent discoloration
If you’re unsure whether something is normal, contact your treating provider.
Don’t try to diagnose a potential laser complication through social media.
What Should You Do After CoolPeel? #
After reading everything you shouldn’t do, CoolPeel aftercare may sound complicated.
For most patients, the basic philosophy is actually simple:
Keep it clean.
Keep it hydrated.
Protect it from the sun.
Don’t pick it.
Don’t irritate it.
Give it time to heal.
Cartessa advises keeping the skin hydrated as dryness and scaling develop during healing.
Your provider may give you more specific instructions based on your treatment settings.
Those instructions should take priority over generic online advice.
When Can You Restart Your Normal Skincare Routine? #
There isn’t one exact day that applies to everyone.
Your provider may have you gradually reintroduce products after the skin barrier has recovered.
Gentle skincare typically comes first.
More active ingredients—such as retinoids, acids, exfoliants, or pigment-correcting products—may need to wait longer.
Don’t restart everything at once simply because the flaking has stopped.
Your skin may look healed before it is ready for aggressive skincare.
How Long Does CoolPeel Recovery Take? #
CoolPeel is designed to offer a more manageable recovery than deeper CO2 resurfacing.
Cartessa notes that redness and warmth may last a day or two and that dryness and scaling can occur as the skin heals.
Many patients experience the most noticeable roughness and dryness during the first several days.
But recovery varies based on:
- Treatment intensity
- Treatment area
- Skin type
- Number of passes
- Individual healing
- Combination treatments
A deeper Tetra CO2 treatment may require significantly more recovery than a light CoolPeel.
Can You Go to Work After CoolPeel? #
Many patients can continue normal daily activities, and Cartessa states that normal daily activities can generally be resumed while early redness and warmth are present.
However, being medically able to return to work and feeling socially ready are two different things.
You may still have:
- Redness
- Dryness
- Rough texture
- Mild swelling
- Flaking
If you have an important meeting, photography session, wedding, or major event, don’t assume you’ll look completely normal the next day.
Plan ahead.
The Biggest CoolPeel Aftercare Mistake #
One of the biggest mistakes is treating CoolPeel like an ordinary facial.
It isn’t.
CoolPeel is fractional CO2 resurfacing.
DEKA’s Tetra PRO is a 10,600-nm CO2 system that allows treatment parameters to control vaporization depth and thermal effects.
Even when downtime is relatively short, your skin is still undergoing a controlled healing process.
Respect that process.
What Not to Do After CoolPeel: Quick Checklist #
After CoolPeel, avoid:
- Picking or peeling the skin
- Scrubbing
- Aggressive exfoliation
- Retinol too soon
- Acids too soon
- Irritating skincare
- Intentional tanning
- Excessive sun exposure
- Excessive heat during early healing
- Saunas and steam rooms too soon
- Strenuous exercise until cleared
- Swimming until cleared
- Waxing or aggressive hair removal over healing skin
- Aggressive facials or additional resurfacing too soon
- Applying random products to irritated skin
- Ignoring worsening or unusual symptoms
Most importantly:
Follow the aftercare instructions from the provider who performed your treatment.
CoolPeel settings can be customized, so your recovery instructions may differ from someone else’s.
A Skin-Forward Approach at AIVI Aesthetics #
At AIVI Aesthetics, the treatment doesn’t end when the laser turns off.
Good results also depend on how your skin is cared for afterward.
We want patients to understand what is normal during recovery, what products to temporarily avoid, how to protect their skin, and when to contact us if something doesn’t look right.
Depending on your skin concerns, we may recommend CoolPeel, deeper Tetra Pro CO2 resurfacing, Vivace RF microneedling, microneedling, regenerative treatments, professional skincare, or another approach.
The goal isn’t simply to perform a treatment.
It’s to protect your skin throughout the entire process so you can achieve healthy, smooth, refreshed, natural-looking results.
