PDRN treatments have gained attention in regenerative aesthetics for their potential to improve skin quality, hydration, texture, elasticity, and fine lines. But just because a treatment is designed to support skin rejuvenation doesn’t mean it is completely free of side effects.

If you’re considering a PDRN cosmetic procedure, understanding what may happen afterward—and which symptoms deserve medical attention—is an important part of making an informed decision.

Are PDRN Cosmetic Procedures Safe? #

PDRN and related polynucleotide products are available in different forms internationally. Their regulatory status and approved uses can vary, and not every product marketed as PDRN or “salmon DNA” is FDA-approved for injection in the United States.

It is therefore important to know exactly what product is being used and how it will be administered.

Common Side Effects of PDRN Cosmetic Procedures #

Many of the expected reactions associated with cosmetic PDRN procedures are related to the treatment technique itself, particularly when a product is administered through multiple injections.

1. Redness #

Temporary redness at the treatment sites can occur after injections or procedures that disrupt the skin barrier.

The skin may look slightly flushed or irritated immediately after treatment. Mild redness typically improves as the skin settles.

2. Swelling #

Swelling is another possible short-term side effect.

Small areas of swelling or raised bumps may appear where a product has been placed into the skin. Depending on the treatment area and technique, these may be more noticeable immediately following the procedure.

The delicate under-eye area may be particularly prone to visible swelling.

3. Bruising #

Any procedure involving needles carries the possibility of bruising.

Small blood vessels can be disrupted during injection, resulting in temporary discoloration around treatment sites.

Some patients bruise more easily than others, and certain medications or supplements may increase bruising risk. Do not stop prescribed medications without discussing this with the clinician who prescribed them.

4. Tenderness or Soreness #

The treated area may feel tender, sensitive, or mildly sore afterward.

This can occur from the injections themselves as well as the temporary inflammatory response associated with treatment.

Discomfort should generally improve rather than become progressively worse.

5. Small Injection-Site Bumps #

Depending on the product and injection technique, small raised bumps or papules may temporarily appear at injection sites.

This can look concerning if you aren’t expecting it, but some superficial injection techniques intentionally place small amounts of product within the skin.

How quickly these areas settle varies according to the product, amount used, treatment location, and individual response.

6. Itching or Skin Irritation #

Some patients may experience temporary itching, sensitivity, or irritation after treatment.

Mild irritation may occur following procedures that involve injections or controlled disruption of the skin barrier.

Persistent, severe, or worsening itching—particularly when accompanied by hives, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty—requires prompt medical attention.

Less Common but More Serious Risks #

Although many post-treatment reactions are temporary, cosmetic procedures can also carry less common but potentially serious complications.

Infection #

Any time the skin barrier is broken, there is a risk of infection.

Possible warning signs include:

• Increasing redness
• Increasing warmth or swelling
• Worsening pain
• Pus or unusual drainage
• Fever
• Redness that continues spreading

These symptoms should be evaluated rather than assumed to be normal post-treatment inflammation.

Allergic or Hypersensitivity Reactions #

PDRN is commonly derived from salmonid DNA sources. Purification processes are intended to reduce unwanted proteins and contaminants, but hypersensitivity or allergic reactions remain a potential concern with any administered product.

Patients should tell their provider about known allergies and previous reactions to medications, injectables, skincare products, or aesthetic treatments.

Severe facial swelling, generalized hives, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or throat swelling requires emergency medical attention.

Persistent Inflammation or Nodules #

A lump immediately following an injection isn’t necessarily a complication. However, a lump that becomes increasingly painful, red, firm, warm, or persistent should be evaluated.

Unusual or prolonged inflammatory reactions require assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.

Side Effects Can Also Depend on How PDRN Is Used #

One important point that is often overlooked online is that “PDRN treatment” can describe very different procedures.

PDRN-related products may be discussed in connection with topical skincare, microneedling protocols, skin boosters, mesotherapy-style techniques, or injectable treatments in markets where specific products are authorized for those uses.

The risks aren’t automatically the same.

For example, applying a cosmetic topical product to intact skin is different from injecting a product beneath the skin. Similarly, placing a product onto freshly microneedled or resurfaced skin changes the exposure pathway.

The product and treatment method matter just as much as the ingredient.

How Long Do PDRN Side Effects Last? #

Minor reactions such as redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or small injection-site bumps are generally expected to be temporary, but there isn’t one recovery timeline that applies to every PDRN procedure.

Recovery depends on:

• Treatment area
• Combination procedures

Your provider should explain what is considered normal for the exact treatment you’re receiving.

Your provider may recommend temporarily avoiding activities or products that could increase irritation, contamination, heat, or inflammation.

Most importantly, follow the aftercare instructions provided for your specific treatment and contact your provider if your recovery doesn’t follow the expected course.

Who Should Be Cautious About PDRN Treatments? #

Not everyone is automatically a candidate for every PDRN cosmetic procedure.

Before treatment, your provider should review your medical history, allergies, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, active skin conditions, infections, and previous reactions to aesthetic procedures.

Patients should also disclose whether they have recently undergone other aesthetic procedures in the same treatment area.
