What Is Salmon DNA in Skincare? #

When aesthetic treatments refer to “salmon DNA,” they aren’t injecting or applying raw salmon DNA to your face.

The term generally refers to highly purified DNA-derived compounds obtained from salmonid sources.

Two terms you’ll commonly encounter are:

PDRN – Polydeoxyribonucleotide

PN – Polynucleotides

2. Salmon DNA May Improve Skin Hydration #

Clinical research involving injectable polynucleotides has reported improvements in hydration. In one study summarized in a systematic review, the PN group showed a greater improvement in hydration than a hyaluronic-acid comparison group at one follow-up point.

A systematic review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology evaluated nine studies involving 219 patients receiving polynucleotide treatments. The review found promising improvements in wrinkles, skin texture, and elasticity, with generally mild and temporary reported side effects.

However, the authors also emphasized that the studies were generally of low to moderate quality, treatment methods varied, and larger high-quality studies are still needed.

That’s important.

Salmon DNA isn’t simply a meaningless skincare trend.

But it also shouldn’t be marketed as a miracle treatment that reverses aging.
