Is Rejuran Injection Safe? #

If you’ve been researching regenerative skin treatments, you’ve probably come across Rejuran injections. Often called a polynucleotide or “salmon DNA” skin treatment, Rejuran has become popular internationally for patients interested in improving skin texture, hydration, elasticity, fine lines, and overall skin quality.

But before considering any injectable treatment, there is a more important question:

Is Rejuran injection safe?

Clinical research on injectable polynucleotides, including Rejuran, suggests a generally favorable safety profile when appropriate products are administered correctly by qualified healthcare professionals. However, Rejuran is still an injectable medical procedure, which means temporary side effects and potentially more serious complications are possible.

It is also important for U.S. patients to understand that availability internationally does not automatically mean an injectable product has FDA approval in the United States. The exact product and its regulatory status should always be verified before treatment.

What Is Rejuran? #

Rejuran is a family of injectable products containing highly purified polynucleotides (PN).

Polynucleotides are DNA-derived molecules that have been studied for their potential role in tissue repair and skin regeneration.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, Rejuran isn’t primarily intended to create significant facial volume. The aesthetic goal is generally to improve the quality of the skin itself.

Depending on the product and treatment plan, patients may seek polynucleotide treatments for concerns such as:

• Fine lines
• Crepey-looking skin
• Dehydration
• Uneven texture
• Reduced elasticity
• Under-eye skin quality
• Acne scars
• Overall skin rejuvenation

This skin-focused approach is one reason Rejuran has gained so much attention among patients who want to look refreshed without dramatically changing their appearance.

Is Rejuran Considered Safe? #

Available research is encouraging, but it is important not to describe any injectable treatment as completely risk-free.

In a prospective study involving 218 participants comparing purified Rejuran polynucleotide with a polycaprolactone product for crow’s feet, treatment-related adverse events occurred, but most were mild and tolerable. Researchers reported no serious adverse events during the study.

More recent clinical reports involving Rejuran have also described favorable safety findings, although some of these studies are small and larger prospective studies are still needed.

So the better answer is:

Rejuran has demonstrated a generally favorable safety profile in available studies, but its safety depends on the specific product, patient, treatment area, injection technique, and provider.

What Are the Common Side Effects of Rejuran? #

Most patients should expect some temporary reaction after a treatment involving multiple injections.

Common side effects reported with polynucleotide injections include:

• Redness
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Tenderness or pain
• Itching
• Small injection-site bumps
• Temporary firmness or induration

In the 218-participant study, the most commonly reported treatment-related reactions included injection-site swelling, pain, bruising, itching, and redness. One participant experienced mild induration and discoloration that resolved spontaneously.

The manufacturer’s instructions also identify potential reactions including erythema, edema, itching, pain, nodules, sclerosis, and discoloration at the injection site.

Why Does Rejuran Leave Small Bumps? #

This is one of the first things patients may notice after treatment.

Rejuran can be administered through multiple small injections placed within the skin. Depending on the technique, this can temporarily leave small raised papules or bumps at the injection sites.

These aren’t necessarily pimples or an allergic reaction.

They may simply reflect where the product was deposited within the skin.

How long they remain visible varies based on the product, amount injected, treatment area, technique, and individual response.

Your provider should explain what to expect before treatment so you’re not surprised by the appearance immediately afterward.

Can Rejuran Cause an Allergic Reaction? #

Hypersensitivity is possible with essentially any injectable product.

The Rejuran instructions specifically list hypersensitivity to sodium polynucleotide as a contraindication and advise against treatment in certain patients with allergic or autoimmune conditions.

This is why your medical and allergy history should be reviewed before treatment.

Significant facial swelling, widespread hives, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or throat swelling following any injectable treatment requires immediate medical attention.

Is There a Risk of Infection? #

Yes.

Any procedure that breaks the skin creates an opportunity for infection, even when the product itself has a favorable safety profile.

The manufacturer’s instructions specifically recognize infection as a risk associated with transcutaneous injection and emphasize appropriate sterile precautions.

Possible signs of infection can include worsening redness, increasing warmth, increasing pain, pus or unusual drainage, fever, or swelling that continues to worsen instead of improving.

These symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

What About Vascular Complications? #

Any facial injectable requires a detailed understanding of anatomy.

The Rejuran instructions state that the product must not be injected into blood vessels and warn that intravascular implantation could result in infarction or tissue necrosis.

Interestingly, a 2026 animal study specifically examined accidental intra-arterial exposure to several polynucleotide formulations, including Rejuran S and Rejuran HB Plus. Researchers observed transient disturbances in arterial flow but did not find persistent embolization, clinical ischemia, or tissue necrosis with the PN products in that animal model. The authors emphasized that additional research is needed.

That does not mean accidental intravascular injection should be considered safe.

Proper anatomy, injection technique, product selection, and provider training remain extremely important.

Who Should Avoid Rejuran? #

Rejuran isn’t automatically appropriate for everyone.

According to the manufacturer’s instructions, contraindications and precautions include certain patients with:

• Hypersensitivity to the product
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Active inflammation or infection at the treatment site
• Certain allergic diseases
• Autoimmune disease
• Certain granulomatous conditions
• Certain medications affecting clotting or immune function

The manufacturer also states that safety and efficacy haven’t been established for some patient groups, including those particularly susceptible to keloid formation, hyperpigmentation, or hypertrophic scarring.

Your individual medical history should therefore be reviewed before treatment rather than relying on a generic list online.

Is Rejuran Safe Under the Eyes? #

The under-eye area is one reason polynucleotide treatments have become so popular.

Patients may be looking to improve:

• Crepey under-eye skin
• Fine lines
• Thin-looking skin
• Dehydration
• Overall skin quality

However, the under-eye region contains delicate tissue and important vascular structures.

That makes proper product selection, injection depth, anatomy, and technique particularly important.

It is also important to determine whether your concern is actually skin quality.

Under-eye hollowness, pigmentation, vascular darkness, fat-pad changes, and skin laxity are different problems and shouldn’t automatically receive the same treatment.

Is Rejuran the Same as Dermal Filler? #

Not exactly.

Traditional hyaluronic acid fillers are generally used to provide volume, contour, or structural support.

Rejuran polynucleotides are more commonly discussed as regenerative or skin-quality treatments.

If your concern is significant facial volume loss, Rejuran shouldn’t automatically replace a treatment designed to restore volume.

If your concern is primarily fine lines, texture, hydration, or thin and crepey-looking skin, a skin-quality treatment may make more sense.

This distinction is important because the best aesthetic results often come from treating the actual cause of the problem rather than choosing a product based on popularity.

What Should U.S. Patients Know About Rejuran? #

This is particularly important.

Rejuran-branded skincare products sold in the United States should not be confused with injectable Rejuran products used internationally.

The company’s U.S. consumer website distinguishes its U.S. Rejuran Advanced skincare line from Rejuran Healer products manufactured in Korea and notes that Rejuran products are available in different markets around the world.

Before receiving any injectable polynucleotide treatment in the United States, ask:

• What is the exact product name?
• Is this product authorized for this use in the United States?
• Where was it obtained?
• Who manufactured it?
• Is it being used according to its approved or authorized indication?
• Who will perform the injections?

“Popular in Korea” and “FDA-approved in the United States” are not interchangeable statements.

How Do You Make Rejuran Treatment Safer? #

Safety begins before the first injection.

Your provider should review your medical history, medications, allergies, previous aesthetic procedures, current skin condition, and treatment goals.

You should also know exactly what is being injected.

The manufacturer’s instructions emphasize sterile technique and state that Rejuran should be administered by healthcare practitioners with appropriate training, experience, and knowledge of injection-site anatomy.

A good consultation should include a discussion of benefits, limitations, alternatives, expected downtime, and potential complications—not just before-and-after photos.

So, Is Rejuran Injection Safe? #

Available evidence suggests that Rejuran polynucleotide injections can have a generally favorable safety profile when properly administered, with most reported reactions being temporary injection-site effects. However, Rejuran is not risk-free.

More importantly, safety isn’t determined by the ingredient alone.

It depends on:

The product. The patient. The provider. The anatomy. The technique. And the regulatory status of the treatment being performed.
